I’m writing this in the midst of the 2020 pandemic. Musicians all over the world (including myself) can’t perform live music in the current situation, so we’re forced to come up with other artistic outlets.

A couple of years ago, I did a project where I wrote nearly 50 pieces for various woodwind combinations, including flutes, clarinets, and saxophones. I recorded all of the music, but I never released it. I’m still kicking ideas around about what to do with all of that music, but in the mean time, I’ve revisited the project and written a new piece called “From Within.”

“From Within” is written for a 12-piece ensemble (3 flutes, alto flute, 3 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 alto saxes, and 2 tenor saxes). On the video and recording, I play all of those parts.

I find it really entertaining and challenging to write and perform music like this. It stretches both my compositional and instrumental chops at the same time!

Please check out the video and if you’d like, I’ve uploaded the score as well.
